BARD Downloadable Audio Books and Magazines

The National Library Service for the Blind (NLS) has the world’s largest collection of digital audio books available for free download. Up to 30 books a month may be downloaded free of charge. Access to the NLS Download Pilot web site is restricted to authorized NLS readers. Patrons must register for and receive a login id and password to access it.

Patrons must have an e-mail address set up in “their” name with “their” home address and must have high speed internet access.

Whoever downloads the books must login in the patron’s name and download to the patron’s e-mail address. The books will not play on a computer. They must be downloaded to a memory card which must then be put in an authorized player. The books are encoded with software that can only be unlocked by an authorized player.

At this point patrons must purchase their own player in order to participate in the NLS BARD program. When the new NLS players become available for free loan in the fall of 2009 the downloaded books may be played on them.

The Victor Reader Stream ($329.00) is currently the least expensive player for NLS downloadable books.

You may review the criteria for participation and request an account by reading the application instructions.
